Our girls need us before menstrual shame reaches her first
Long before her first period arrives, a girl is already learning what menstruation means.
She's noticing what's whispered about.
What gets hidden. The jokes. The embarrassment.
How the women around her speak about - or disconnect from - their own bodies.
And when her first period eventually arrives, she's learning far more than how to use a pad.
She's learning:
Is my changing body welcome?
Can I ask for what I need?
Is this something to celebrate or conceal?
Do I belong still now I'm changing?
Am I safe in my body - and what about the world?
This is why First Moon Circles® exist.
Girls absolutely need accurate menstrual and puberty education.
But information is not initiation. A rite of passage is.
Information can tell a girl what is happening.
A consciously held rite of passage can change what the experience means to her.

Mums will pull you aside and say "I've been watching your stuff and I really want to do a circle for my daughter". Mums are the ones that are giving their daughter this experience, so there's a lot of pride in that, and then they're thinking back to their story, and so you're holding space for the mums too, which is really nice.

Women may come into the training because they want to change the way girls experience menarche.
But once they’re trained and begin carrying the work, something else often happens.

Giselle is booked up all year. Her public First Moon Circles sell out, mothers book her privately to hold circles especially for their daughters, and she has become one of our School mentors.
Beth fills her circles, consults with schools, teaches menstrual education in high schools, created further sisterhood circles for girls and became one of our mentors.
Ellie and Georgia have taken First Moon Circles to festivals, to promote their businesses far and wide, and reach lots of girls at once.
And Shivani in Sri Lanka has taken this work further into menstrual education with girls and schools - plus she's created her own parent programs venturing into related topics to compliment her circles.
